The world’s biggest gathering of geeks, nerds, fans and enthusiasts (I can say these things because I am one) officially began yesterday in San Diego with enough festivities, costumes, fans and swag to fill a Death Star. I’m talking, of course, about the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con.
Fans were greeted by many things on the first day. Twi-hards (hardcore Twilight fans to the rest of us) got a sneak peek preview at Edward and Bella’s honeymoon and appearances by Hugh Jackman, Justin Timberlake, Sarah Michelle Gellar and the wonderful cast of Game of Thrones were also on hand for day one.
In addition to that, directors like Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Rodriguez and Nicolas Winding Refn were on hand for a few movie panels. Author of Game of Thrones George R.R. Martin was also in attendance giving fans a nerdgasm to remember.
Comic-Con is the biggest gathering for fans of video games, movies, television, comic books, toys and everything nerd. There were already some big announcements on the first day. The first official trailer for Drive starring Ryan Gosling was debuted as was Captain America’s costume for the upcoming 2012 movie The Avengers. Other debuts included the first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man as well as a glimpse into the new Underworld film, the animated Mass Effect movie and all the Game of Thrones fans could ask for.
On the video game side, Bioware and LucasArts announced that pre-orders for their upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic are now available (still no release date though, cheeky boys). In other Star Wars news, there was a lot of talk about the upcoming September release of the entire Star Wars saga on Blu-ray as well as the unveiling of a new R2-D2 themed Xbox 360 slim Kinect bundle. The bundle comes with the console, a C3PO gold controller, matching white Kinect sensor, Star Wars: Kinect and Kinect Adventures.
This is just a taste of how things are going down at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con this year and if the rest of the event is anything like the first day, then be prepared for one helluva show.
